Why Do I Constantly Wake Up Feeling Tired?

Mar 2, 2018 | Health & Wellbeing

Do you constantly wake up feeling tired? And- more importantly- what can you do to overcome it? While getting a good night’s sleep is easier said than done, there are a few things you can do to get your sleep on track. If you’re fed up of constantly waking up feeling tired, read on to discover what could be the underlying causes.

1. Changing Brain Waves

As we get older the amplitude of our brain waves reduces. This means we experience lighter sleep than we did when were younger. As a consequence of this it’s a lot easier to be disturbed during the night causing you to wake up feeling tired.

“The NSF found that 71% of 55- to 64-year-olds report some sleep problem, including difficulty falling asleep, waking up still tired, or snoring.”

2. Lack of Support

Did you know that your bed could actually be causing you to wake up feeling tired? We’ve all experienced the frustration of tossing and turning at night. This is often caused by a lack of support in the areas of your body which need it the most. Adjustable beds can move into an infinite variety of positions. Designed to help you find that ideal position for a perfect night’s sleep, you’ll not only experience incredible support and comfort all night long, you’ll wake up feeling completely refreshed.

If you would like to sleep better and wake up feeling refreshed, why not try an adjustable bed?

3. Medical Conditions

It could be that an illness is causing you to wake up feeling tired. Conditions such as back ache, arthritis and sleep apnea all make sleeping a challenge. The Medications you take to combat some of these issues can also cause insomnia. Luckily treating underlying medical conditions can really help to improve your quality of sleep.

“Sleep is up there with oxygen and water- we simply cannot survive without it”

4. Acid Reflux

The burning pain of acid reflux is enough to wake the deepest sleepers, however, silent reflux can also interrupt your sleep without you even realising it.

Top tips: To avoid acid reflux try sleeping on your left hand side which helps to reduce your symptoms, avoid painkillers before bed time and steer clear of spicy, high fat foods.

5. Going To The Toilet at Night

Aging triggers hormonal changes, which make you need to go to the toilet more frequently. This inevitably disrupts your sleep causing you to wake up feeling tired.

Top tips: Stop drinking at least 3 hours before you go to sleep, avoid alcohol in the evening and try to go to the toilet before you to bed.

6. Weight Gain

Surprisingly putting on weight can cause you to wake up feeling tired as it causes you to snore. Having a fatter neck narrows your windpipe, reduces the oxygen getting into your system and makes you wake up with a jolt.

7. Poor Sleep Habits

If you find that you constantly wake up feeling tired, your sleeping habits could also be to blame. Try following these pointers to sleep better at night:

Be consistent:

Try to go to sleep and wake up at the same time which will help you to wake up feeling refreshed

Turn off your digital devices

Whether its your phone, kindle or laptop, turn them off in the bedroom to keep you distraction free

Watch what you drink

Caffeine stays in your system for up to 14 hours so will keep you awake when you are trying to get your much needed ZZZ’s

Exercise is a great way to not only keep healthy but it helps to regulate your body clock which makes you feel sleepy

Keep your room dark and quiet:

Avoid foods high in sugar, fat and spice which can cause you to feel drowsy in the day time

What if you are doing all of the right things – avoiding caffeine, going to bed at the right time, establishing healthy routines and so on- and you still wake up feeling tired? The problem could lie with your bed. If you’d like to rediscover a good night sleep, get in touch with our experts today and see how a bed from The Adjustable Bed Factory could help.
